NECVL Championships

The 2011 season came to a close on March 27th for the PC men's volleyball team. After a day of strong competition in the qualifying round, PC was able to edge over both UMass Amherst and Northeastern to ensure a spot in sunday's playoff championships. The Friars drew a tough seed in University of New Hampshire for their quarterfinal match. One of our Key players went down with a shoulder injury early in the match, and despite incredible play, UNH emerged victorious and moved on through the semis only to lose to Boston College in the Finals. UNH competed in the Club National Tournament  in Houston, TX (april 7-9) with oustanding play. In the final round they topped fellow NECVL powerhouse URI to take the National Title for Divsion I AA. I guess if you are going to lose to someone.... it might as well be the team that went on to win a Championship at Nationals.

Meanwhile, the Friars have selected new class officers and look forward to lots of ballin on the beach courts this summer before returning to the Prov for the start of yet another season of exciting Friar Volleyball.

Its been a pleasure everyone. So long for now!

Pender (yes im finally graduating and leaving PC for good)

Roger Williams Divisional

Posted by Kevin Pender on February 22, 2011 at 10:45 AM Comments comments (0)

On sunday 2/19, The Misfits were in action again at Roger Williams University. In unorthodox fashion the Friars won the first match of the day. Outside Hitter Drew Colon and Opposite Brendan Corley dropped bombs all over the cour tot make quick work of beighbor Brown University 25-13, 25-10.

The Friars continued to Roll through the day against Yale and Roger Williams. The outstanding offensive play from Nick Mizera, Kyle Mischke, and Trevor Bernadyn allowed Colon and Brendan a chance to utilize their athleticism and creativity. Sophomore Kyle Mischke showed off at the Middle Blocker position with double digit kills and hosting a big block party for the entire day... making his mom and pop proud as they experienced their first ever volleyball match. With senior setter Austin Hagaman running the offense like a young tom brady, PC's offense became unstoppable and the opponents defense didn't know what hit them. Libero Justin Gomes picked up his defensive play and serve receive to allow the offense to assert its destructive dominance. Don't believe me? jump on facebook to the Providence College Men's Volleyball group page to check out footage from the tourney!

The final match of the day against Columbia is where we stumbled ever so subtly. After quickly going up 10pts, Coach Bill brought in our secret weapons.... Ross "the Bossman" Carman took over the reigns as setter with great success. Dave O'Connor also entered the game to shut it down on the outside. But it was the incredible Defensive play of young Dan Harty that gave the Friars the victory in the first game. During the Second game, the Misfits went up again by 8 points, and Coach Bill brought in the bench to get some experience. The bench played well, but Colombia dug deep and brought their A game. They rallied to take the second match from our Bench squad 26-24. The third game brought trouble as Columbia continued to battle and the Refs didn't make it any easier. in the final 6 points, there were 3 poorly officiated calls, and Columbia benefited to win the tiebreak 15-13.

The Misfits ended the day as the top team sporting a 3-1 record and the largest margin of victory.

You can catch the Friar Misfits back in action at the NECVL Championships on March 26-27 at CCRI Lincoln Campus in good old Rhode Island!

Thank you to all the friends and family that have attended our tournaments this year to show their support! And a special thanks goes out to John Maleria '10 who graced us with his support at RWU and helped push us to such a high level of play. Thanks John and Goodluck in DC!

on 2/13 the Friars traveled to Northeastern University and met with continued success. PC again dropped its first match against North Division Bully Boston University. The Friars bounced back to serve Brandies University and Roger Williams with back to back loses. PC finished 3rd and proceeded through the playoffs to reach the Semi-Finals and lose to Northeastern in 3 games.

Divisional Tourney @ "YALE" 2/5

Well the morning started off shakey when Yale found out they could not fit the tournament into its gym as planned, so we were moved to the CT sports Center in Woodbridge Connecticut.

We lost our first match to UConn in 2 games. Then played URI extremely well taking the first game 25-18, and losing the second 27-25. The third game was a muscle match between two offensive powerhouses. onece tied 13-13, both sides traded points back and forth to continue the match point until URI finally ended that match 23-21. The Friars ended the day by Spanking Central Connecticut State before heading back to Providence for the night.

We would like to thank all teams who attended and we look forward to hosting the 3rd Annual Friar Classic again next fall!

1-0... YUP. Scrimmage vs Johnson and Wales University

Posted by Kevin Pender on October 23, 2010 at 1:51 PM Comments comments (0)

On Friday October 22nd, the Friars Club team traveled to Johnson and WalesUniversity to compete in a best of 5 Scrimmage against their Div III Varsityprogram.

The Friars emerged victorious over the Wildcats 3 games to 2 (30-28, 27-30,30-26, 38-30, and 15-4). Although we were without two of our current starters, our defense and serve receive from key players like Dave Pezza (RI 2014),helped fuel our offensive weapons. Freshmen Trevor Bernadyn (RI‘14), DaveO'Connor (NY‘14), and Nick Mizera (IL‘14) relentlessly attacked the Wildcatsfrom the opposite and outside, while solid net-play from the sophomore twintowers Dan Harty (CT‘13) and Kyle Mischke (CT’13) stabilized the middle.Superior service from Kevin Pender (MA’09,’11) led the Friars to several 6 and7 point runs at key moments. Austin Hagaman (NJ‘11) and Ross Carman's (MA’12)soft hands produced perfectly placed sets making pounding balls into the tenfoot line look easy. Outstanding performance from the unstoppable Drew Colon(NJ’11) drove the Friars to victory as he tore through JWU defense with hisarsenal of middle and back row attacks.  Every player was able to join thematch and contribute defensive and service play which ensured the ultimatevictory.

Friday night was a great start to the 2010-11 seasons, and the Friars willbe back in action on Wednesday October 27th as they travel to scrimmage BrownUniversity's Club team.

The Friars look to host a home scrimmage against neighbor rival URI inearly November and will play host to the Second Annual Friar Classic on November21st in the Peterson Field House beginning at 11am. Current Teams registeredare URI, Brown, University of Hartford, Mass Chaos (Yankee), and Stonehill. PCwill be fielding two separate teams in the Friar Classic this year.
